Common MLA Citation Questions

Do I need a URL for a website citation?

Yes, MLA 9 requires the URL for online sources. However, you should omit the "https://" part. Our generator automatically removes this for you to keep your citation clean.

What if there is no author?

If a source has no author, start the citation with the Title. For organizations (like a government agency or company), check the "Organization / Corporate Author" box in our tool.

What is a hanging indent?

A hanging indent means the first line of the citation is flush left, and all subsequent lines are indented 0.5 inches. This makes it easier for readers to scan the list by author name.

Is this generator for MLA 8 or 9?

This tool uses the latest MLA 9th Edition rules, which is the current standard for academic writing in 2025.
